Trezor Safe 3 vs Safe 5 vs Safe 7

Trezor Safe 3 vs Safe 5 vs Safe 7: Trezor sells three current hardware wallets: the Safe 3, the Safe 5 and the Safe 7. They share the same basic job, which is keeping your keys offline. The differences are the screen, wireless connection and the security chips inside.

The short answer

  • Safe 3: the simplest Trezor. A small screen with two buttons, USB-C only, and no wireless.
  • Safe 5: the same security chip as the Safe 3, with a larger color touchscreen, haptic feedback and a microSD slot. Still USB-C only.
  • Safe 7: the largest screen, Bluetooth, a built-in battery, and two secure elements. It is also the model that had a chip flaw disclosed in 2026 (see below).

Which Trezor fits which person?

Safe 3: you want the basics

The Safe 3 has the same secure element as the Safe 5 and no wireless, so there is less to configure. The trade-off is the small screen and two-button navigation, which can make long addresses and details harder to read and confirm.

Safe 5: you want an easier screen without wireless

The Safe 5 adds a color touchscreen with haptic feedback and a microSD slot, but stays USB-C only. It suits someone who wants easier navigation and does not want Bluetooth.

Safe 7: you want a phone-friendly device

The Safe 7 adds Bluetooth, a built-in battery and a larger screen. Trezor says the Bluetooth connection can be turned off in settings and that USB-C works without it. It also works with iOS and Android, can act as a FIDO2 security key, and works with WalletConnect apps. Trezor lists no wired-only version of the Safe 7 at this time.

What was the Safe 7 chip flaw?

In June 2026, researchers from Ledger’s security team (Ledger Donjon) and the chip maker Tropic Square disclosed a vulnerability in TROPIC01, one of the two secure elements in the Safe 7, according to The Block. Points reported there:

  • The attack was done in a lab. Researchers opened the chip and used a precisely calibrated laser to disrupt its firmware verification.
  • Trezor says funds, wallet backups and private keys are not stored on that chip and are not at risk, and that the PIN, backup and keys are never held on a single chip by design.
  • The report says a firmware setting that disables the chip’s maintenance mode closes the main entry point, and that a hardened version of the chip is scheduled for late 2026.
  • The report says Tropic Square later found a separate path involving PIN-related protection and has not yet published technical details.

Ledger is a competitor of Trezor, so both companies have a commercial interest in how this is described. The details above come from one news report and Trezor’s own statements. Before buying a Safe 7, read Trezor’s and Tropic Square’s current statements for any updates.

Backups: multi-share option

Trezor says Multi-share Backup is available on the Safe 7, Safe 5, Safe 3 and Model T. It splits your backup into 1 to 16 shares, based on the SLIP39 standard, and a threshold number of shares is needed to recover the wallet. Trezor warns that an older single-share backup stays valid, so a compromised single-share backup can still expose your funds. Check that the new backup works before you destroy the old one.

Buying safely

  • Trezor says its own store is the best place to buy, and that its official resellers receive stock directly from Trezor.
  • Type the maker’s address yourself instead of following search results. Fake setup pages that imitate wallet makers exist.
  • Never type your recovery phrase into a website, app or support chat.
  • Test your backup with a small amount before you move savings.
Rule of thumb: choose the Trezor whose screen and connection you will actually use with care. The security habits matter more than the model.

Frequently asked questions

Trezor lists multi-share backup for the Safe 7, Safe 5, Safe 3 and Model T.

Can I use a Trezor with my phone?

Trezor says the Safe 7 supports wireless use on iOS and Android. The Safe 3 and Safe 5 connect through USB-C.

What if I lose the device?

Your funds can be restored from your backup on a compatible wallet, which is why the backup matters more than the device.
